30th anniversary of the tragedy of January 20, 1990

A memorial ceremony was held at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to commemorate the tragedy of January 20, 1990.

The event was attended by embassy staff, Azerbaijanis living in Qatar, as well as representatives of the local community.

The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs. Then Ambassador Rashad Ismailov spoke to the participants about the history of the tragedy and the fight for the independence and freedom of the Azerbaijani people.

Speaking about the causes and consequences of the January 20 events, the ambassador said that the tragedy was one of the bloodiest events in the recent history of Azerbaijan, hundreds of our citizens were killed and wounded, and the devastation occurred. The citizens of the country killed that day opened a glorious page in the history of Azerbaijan's struggle for independence and freedom. He stressed that the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev came to the Azerbaijani representation in Moscow the next day after the tragedy and demanded the punishment of the organizers and executors of the crime against the people. The ambassador also said that the memory of the martyrs of January 20, the glorification of their names, as well as the strengthening of social protection of their families were always in the focus of attention of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and important measures were taken.

The Ambassador added that the January 20 tragedy further strengthened the will of the Azerbaijani people to establish their own independent state and resulted in the restoration of freedom and independence shortly after the tragedy.

The event continued with a screening of a film dedicated to the memory of 20 January martyrs.
